Connectors on the Move

WHY THE CONNECTOR MATTERS Connectors are integral to several components and applications within vehicles including lighting, electronic control modules (ECMs), and entertainment systems. Lighting can be found in multiple areas around (headlights, taillights, signaling) and within (interior lighting, dashboards) transport vehicles. The lighting, now typically light emitting diodes (LEDs), is essential for safety and visibility. Not choosing the right connector for lighting could increase the risk to the vehicle operator and to any vehicle nearby. Electronic control modules (ECMs) act as the control center for various systems and provide real-time monitoring and adjustments for optimal performance, safety, and fuel efficiency. Not choosing the right connector could lead to an unsafe and inefficient transport vehicle due to potential interruptions in monitoring and adjustments. Entertainment systems are a major component but are not as essential as lighting or ECMs when it comes to performance and safety of the vehicle.

Vibration and shock: A rugged connector with high retention is necessary for maintaining a secure connection in environments susceptible to vibration and shock. Chemicals: Chemicals can corrode certain materials used in a connector assembly. For example, transport vehicles in colder temperatures are commonly exposed to sodium chloride (NaCl), also known as road salt, for de-icing or anti-icing. Rugged connectors with appropriate materials or shielding can prevent corrosion. UV radiation: Prolonged UV exposure can cause brittleness in some plastics while heat exposure can cause expansion and melting of materials used in connector assemblies. Selecting a rugged connector with proper materials and operating temperature ranges is important to meet the requirements that prevent these issues. Electromagnetic interference (EMI): To prevent communication problems and potential system failures, consider a rugged connector with protection against EMI. Proper shielding and twisted cables should also be considered to further prevent EMI.
