Rugged Interconnects for Harsh Environments eBook

CONNECTORS AND TOOLING FOR DIFFICULT ACCESS

environmental factors can damage electronic systems and negatively affect the performance of the RF signal path. An IP rating defines the level of protection provided against the intrusion of both dust and water. To select a part with the correct rating, you will need to consider the severity of exposure to water and dirt and how long this exposure will last. For example, an IP67 rating provides dust-tight protection against the ingress of solid contaminants for two to eight hours of continual exposure and protection against water ingress when immersed in depths of 15 cm to 1 m for up to 30 minutes. The IP68 rating provides the same protection from solids, but also protects against long-term immersion equal to that of IP67 and up to the manufacturer’s specified depths and water pressures.

Secure mating of connectors within harsh environments can sometimes prove tricky. For this reason, harsh environment connectors tend to have enhanced grip features for easier handling. With some connector types, a specialized housing may be required to achieve this. With others, the body or coupling mechanism of the connector is extended to provide access and greater grip.

The Easy Grip BNC features an extended coupling nut that provides not only a secure locking mechanism but also a larger surface area for gripping the connector.

In applications that require connectors to be mounted very tightly together, finger access is not always possible. An insert or extract tool can be used to guide the connector into small spaces for correct mating.

N-Type Sealed IP68 Crimp Top Hat Clamp Plug in white bronze. The IP68 level of ingress protection makes this connector suitable for use in harsh environments where immersion is possible.
