The low profile of the Datamate, along with right- angle versions, address the need for limited gaps between PCBs in space hardware. Connectors can be positioned at the edge of the PCBs, avoiding the need for cabling to reach further into these boards. This means that cables and connectors are much easier to access when the hardware is being assembled, and cables do not need to be bent to such great angles, making them less likely to break. GAUSS successfully trialed the Harwin connectors and they now play an integral role in the communication and data processing elements of the UNISAT-7. These interconnects transport all the data used and collected by this equipment. They are also essential to the spacecraft’s power systems.
