Optimizing Connectors for Harsh Environments

The expanding use of electronic equipment in harsh environments has increased the need for water- proof and ruggedized connectors. OEMs and their sub-assembly manufacturers need innovative solutions that will allow equipment to operate outside of traditional indoor locations or large outdoor cabinets—in some cases, this equipment needs to be designed to endure submersion in water and continue working normally. Suppliers have seen the frequen- cy of requests for such products increase significantly, from maybe one or two a year, to weekly. Understanding the characteris- tics of the environments where connectors will be stored and deployed is the starting point for specifying the appropriate RF connectors for use in harsh envi- ronments. Equipment that requires robust interconnection solutions is found across multiple market segments.
