GETTING THE RIGHT SPEED WITH BOARD-TO-BOARD CONNECTION THOMAS SCHULZE, M.SC., PRODUCT MANAGER, BOARD-TO-BOARD CONNECTORS, PCB CONNECTORS, PHOENIX CONTACT GMBH & CO. KG, BLOMBERG, GERMANY
Figure 1: While simple pin and base strips are sufficient in some devices, other applications require high-speed board- to-board connections.
Data transmission speed is a decisive feature in board-to-board connectors. But is a high-speed solution always necessary? When considering speed, often it is in terms of reaching limits or top speeds. Achieving the highest speed possible, however, is not always required. What is important is to achieve the right speed for the application in question. After all, a jet is not necessary for a trip to the local grocery store. Understanding which criteria are relevant is important for selecting the best component for any application (Figure 1).
WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN THE SELECTION PROCESS? Even in high-speed architectures, the required data transmission rate matters far more than the maximum permissible speed, and interconnects should be specified to satisfy that objective. Board-to-board connectors offer precise solutions for managing the flow of data. These are available in simple pin and base strips that can be selected in the ideal arrangements for the application’s needs.
